My fiancee had kidney stone removal surgery 3 days ago, and still is in severe pain. Is there a complication?

People often have pain after kidney stone procedures due to obstruction to the flow of urine caused by stone fragments passing down the ureter. For this reason, urologists often place a stent after these procedures. Ureteral stents are hollow plastic tubes that have a curl up in the kidney and down in the bladder, allowing unimpeded urine flow while the ureter heals after the procedure. But the stent can cause symptoms, too. The curl of plastic in the bladder can cause irritation and bladder spasms, which are perceived as urinary urgency and frequency (gotta go all the time). Also, because the stent is just a tube, pressure building up in the bladder can be transmitted up to the kidney, stretching the inside of the kidney, which can cause sever pain, similar to kidney stone obstructive pain. To minimize the stent pains, it is best not to delay urinating. Most likely, your fiancee's pains will resolve when the stent is removed.
