Pain induced high blood pressure?
The other night I was admitted to hospital with severe pain in my left side (later to be diagnosed as kidney stones). Before the diagnosis they kept asking me over and over if i had chest pain, left arm numbness or any other heart attack symptoms. I didn't have any of these, but my blood pressure had gone from my normal 120/77 to 145/96 . The nurse didn't believe it and thought her machine was faulty so my blood pressure was taken on both arms with 2 different machines, and then manually on each arm and resulted in the same blood pressure. Did they continuously ask about heart attack symptoms because they thought I was having one due to the blood pressure, or did they think the pain induced high blood pressure may cause a heart attack? Thanks!
I should add that after the pain killers took effect my blood pressure returned to normal, and the following morning my blood pressure was 116/66.
Also, if it's important, i'm a 21 yo female.
I'm not American....
Passing a kidney stone (renal calculi) causes severe pain. Perhaps because it was on your left side they thought you might be having a heart attack.Pain causes hypertension and trying to pass a kidney stone ranks way up at the top for pain intensity.I'm assuming that they did an ecg and it was normal. Also I bet you didn't look well either. I don't understand when you write that the nurse didn't believe your blood pressure, pain causes hypertension, and the worse your pain is the higher your blood pressure goes. Your BP went down after you were given pain medication. I think they were just being cautious. How did it end, did you pass the stone? Take care Donna
