How long does it take to form a kidney stone large enough to cause a problem?
The period of time I am looking for is from having no stone(s) at all to having one(s) able to be identified.
We do not know for sure how long it will take for the new stone to form. keep in mind that there are different type of stones (calcium, uric acid, etc) most common being the calcium and comprising about 75%.
In terms of is identifiable is a different question if you are referring to a person being able to feel the pain from the stone versus a doctor being able to see it on the x-ray. remember that most stones are visible on a x-ray = but not all . We usually say that most stones less than 5 mm should be able pass on their own and will not require any type of intervention.
Also remember that other conditions can present with similar symptoms as kidney stones - general rule is always consult your physician when in doubt. this is not meant to be a medical advice and is given for education purposes only.
