kidney stones lithotripsy
How long should a Kidney Stent stay in?

I am wondering how long a kidney stent should stay in. My mother had one put in about 2 days ago and from what she understood it will be in a week or more. Is that normal? My mother has Kidney stones and underwent Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy about a week ago. She has not passed the stone yet. She is worried to death and wondering what is the normal amount of time this stent should stay in?

I had two lithotripsies and never had a stent, but my understanding was that they usually do stay in about a week or so. There could be several reasons why the stone hasn't passed. It could just need a little more time. Or if it was in a difficult location in the kidney or made of a very hard substance the lithotripsy may not have had any effect on it. It didn't mine. Mine was very hard and in the ureter instead of the kidney, and I had to have a ureteroscopy, which is where they go through the bladder and into the ureter with a laser and dissolve the stone. Lithotripsy usually works best on stones in the kidney, ureteroscopy works best on stones in the ureter. And again, it depends on where the stone is located and what it is made out of. Your mom needs to follow up with her doctor, who can best advise her what to do next and put her mind at ease. I hope she does well.

Urinary stone disease constitutes more than a quarter of urologists’ workload in the Western countries and is more than half in the Middle-East and Central Asian countries. The surgical management of stone disease has changed considerably in the last five years and our understanding of mechanism of stone disease has improved with some old concepts discarded and newer theories gaining ground. All papers have been peer-reviewed. A generation ago, the management of patients with urinary stones was forever altered with the introduction of minimally invasive treatment techniques such as shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy, and percutaneous stone removal. We are on the cusp of, again, revolutionary developments in the management and prevention of nephrolithiasis. This conference featured a...
