Ureteroscopic stone removal?
I am a 28yr female. I have a 10 mm kidney stone stuck in the bottom part of my ureter. I have suffered so much pain!!! My doctor told me I would be having a Ureteroscopic stone removal procedure. Has any body had that done? what should i expect? please help me....i'm kinda scared of more pain!
Let me see if I can help you on this:
First, all 3mm stones will pass spontaneously! A 10 mm stone is a little big for spontaneous passage.
If you have fever it is imperative that the stone be attended immediately...you need to bypass the obstruction by placing a ureteral catheter and stone removal should be planned once infections subsided.
If you have no fever...stone can be removed by ureteroscopy with or without lithotripsy (meaning breaking the stone inside the ureter, under direct vision, if too big to extract). This is probably the best procedure to do if you have a well trained Urologist in the performance of this procedure).
What other alternatives do you have? even if costly?:
You can have the Urologist insert a double J Catheter in the side affected and then do ESWL (Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) meaning the stone is broken using this machine without open surgery. The broken fragments of the stone should be allowed to pass.
If I were you: I will make sure that my Urologist is well trained in ureteroscopic stone extraction, meaning removing stones ureteroscopically, under direct visual control and not blindly. The facility must have the capability to break that stone inside the ureter if need be. Procedure is done under general anesthesia so you won't feel nothing.
If the stone is calcified in x-ray, then it is not uric acid stone. meaning it cannot be dissolved by medications.
Good luck
