After the cancer cells have been killed the damaged non-cancerous cells well are replaced with healthy cells making the side effect temporary after the treatment ceases.

Chemotherapy may be given as an adjuvant treatment after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. This may reduce the chance of breast cancer recurrence. It is also used in women that have a recurrence after initial treatment for localized breast cancer.

When prostate cancer is diagnosed but it is found the cancer has spread chemotherapy may again be order. Sometime the cancer can return in a distant location months or years after initial treatment thus chemotherapy may be prescribed.
